How To Properly Care For Your Pet's Paw Pads During Hot Weather

Summer is here, and it's time to hit the beach, go on hikes, and take your furry friend for long walks. However, with soaring temperatures and scorching concrete, hot weather can be harsh on your pet's paws. Just like humans, pets need extra care during hot weather to keep themselves safe and healthy. One of the most important things to care for during hot weather is their paw pads.

Keep the paw pads moisturised

During hot weather, the paw pads can get dry and rough, leading to cracking and peeling. Apply a pet-safe moisturiser to the paw pads regularly to keep them soft and supple. Avoid using human moisturisers, as they can contain harmful chemicals. Try using natural oils like coconut or olive oil, or invest in a dog paw balm specifically designed for paw pad care.

Avoid hot surfaces

During hot weather, surfaces like concrete, asphalt, and sand can become scorching hot, causing severe burns and painful blisters on your pet's paw pads. Always check the ground temperature with your hand before taking your pet for a walk or run. Between 10 am and 4 pm, the sun is strongest so we advise to walk your pet before or after this time frame. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your pet's paws. Try walking your pet during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening.

Keep the nails trimmed

Overgrown nails can cause discomfort and make your pet more susceptible to slipping on hot surfaces. Keep your pet's nails trimmed regularly to prevent injuries and ensure proper paw pad placement. If you're not confident about trimming your pet's nails, seek professional help from a veterinarian or a pet groomer.

Clean the paws regularly

During hot weather, your pet's paws can collect dirt, dust, and other debris, causing irritation and infection in the paw pads. Clean the paws regularly with a damp cloth or a pet-safe wipe to remove the debris. Also, check between the toes for any foreign objects or signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or discharge.

Use protective gear

If you're planning on taking your pet on a hike or a beach walk, consider investing in high-quality paw protectors or shoes. Dog boots or dog shoes can help prevent burns, blisters, and injuries and provide extra cushioning and support to the paw pads. However, don't use protective gear for extended periods, as they can make the paw pads sweaty and damp, leading to infections.

Taking care of your pet's paw pads during hot weather is crucial for their overall health and well-being. By following some simple tips, such as keeping the paw pads moisturised, avoiding hot surfaces, keeping the nails trimmed, cleaning the paws regularly, and using protective gear, you can ensure your furry friend stays comfortable and safe during the summer months. Always keep an eye on your pet's behaviour and look out for any signs of discomfort or pain. If you notice any abnormalities, contact your veterinarian immediately. With proper paw pad care, you and your furry companion can enjoy the summer season to the fullest.
