At Roundwood Vets we believe that life is better with animals and when we dedicate ourselves to helping others. We also believe strong and healthy relationships are a massive part of how to be happy. And we believe that our veterinary practice is has become the vet of choice for pet owners in NW London because we have created a vet practice where people can live and breath these beliefs each day.
The team here is relatively small but amazing and the work we do makes a positive impact on so many local families who rely on their pets for love, connection and support.
We place the values of friendly service, personal growth and joy at the heart of what we do. We also believe only the best is good enough for the animals we work with. We also do our jobs to a very high standard and have fun.
The practice has been in operation for more than twelve years and over the last three years the new owners (we are independent) have renovated and invested in the best equipment to do a good job. Consequently, we have grown quickly and we are delighted that we can now offer a permanent place for a vet student to rotate through our practice and offer an intern role under the supervision of both our senior nurses and veterinary director.
We have systems and procedures in place for doing things right we need someone who is happy to follow procedure and keep the system running smoothly.
About The EMS Rotation
Your EMS rotation will involve you learning and undertaking a variety of activities that support your clinical development and help you to become a better vet.
Some of your responsibilities will include:
Inpatient Care - Taking patients for toilet breaks, feeding, watering and administering premeds/ medications. Plus the collection of blood and placing IV lines.
Giving TLC to inpatients whether sick or not - we hate for patients to just sit in a kennel all day bored, so we want you to give them some love! Some cats, for example, will not eat unless you are giving them a good old bum scratch. This may seem small, but nutrition is a big deal, so little actions like this make a huge difference.
General cleaning - it is essential that you know how to keep a clinic and its equipment clean as a vet, our nurses will instruct you.
Stock management for clinical areas.
Kit preparation and autoclaving.
Running basic lab tests like blood and urine.
Anaesthetic recovery monitoring.
There will be more to do, but this gives you a flavour we’re sure. We’ll provide you with some objectives and a checklist to sign off the skills you acquire during the time you spend with us.
We are looking vet students who have an interest in general practice and specifically those who want to see what life in a well run, happy practice is like. You’ll be naturally hard working and curious, with a passion for life and a commitment to doing what is required to improve.
You’ll be happy to take guidance from anyone who wants to help you grow as a person and in return, you’ll be gracious and look for opportunities to help others get better too.
You will probably be one of (if not the most) trustworthy, honest person you know. You can be serious when needed, but in general, you like to have fun at work. This matters as we do rtend to goof around a bit at work - we’re dead serious about getting the job done, but we try to do it with fun.
In return for your hard work and if you complete your objectives you will be rewarded with:
A complimentary copy of Dr Dave Nicol’s best selling book, “So You’re A Vet...Now What?” (Worth £9.95.)
A fully funded scholarship place within the VetX:Thrive community where you can learn the life skills required to be successful. (Worth £365.)
A glowing reference from our head vet and nurse which you can use when looking for future work. (Priceless.)
